Fourth wave COVID-19 threat: Over 500 cases in Delhi for second day in a row, Kerala reports 213 deaths
India covid cases: India is witnessing another spike in COVID-19 cases with 1,247 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total active caseload to 11,860. A total of 928 were also cured in one day. According to Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health, India has registered a 90 per cent increase in new COVID cases in just one day.
India has also recorded a 165 per cent increase in the daily positivity rate, with some states reporting a sudden rise in COVID cases including Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. More than 500 cases have been reported in Delhi for the second consecutive day. According to a local survey, there has been a 500% increase in the number of people reporting COVID to someone in their nearest circle in Delhi-NCR in the last 15 days.
Around 213 people have died in the state of Kerala in the last 24 hours, which is a worrying report. The Center has asked Kerala to provide updated Covid data daily and noted that the delayed reporting of state data has affected India's key pandemic surveillance indicators, including cases, deaths and positivity rates.
Delhi sees a massive spike for the first time since January 2022
With the city reporting 501 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, Delhi's COVID-19 positivity rate has risen to 7.72 per cent, taking the total number of active cases in the city to 1729. Though the number is 16 less than the number of Covid cases reported yesterday, this is the second day in a row that over 500 cases have been reported in the capital. The total number of Kovid infected patients in Delhi is also the highest after March 3.
Delhi has been witnessing a rise in daily COVID-19 cases in the last few days despite less testing. For the first time since January, the COVID positivity rate increased from 4.21 per cent on April 17 to 7.72 per cent on April 18. This comes after the Delhi government removed the fine for wearing masks in the capital. Earlier in Delhi, a fine of Rs 2000 was imposed for violating the mask rule.
The last time Delhi's positivity rate was above 7 per cent was on January 29 (7.4%) and January 28 (8.6%).
