What are skin tags?

Ever noticed your skin growing out? Like a narrow and short stick sticking out. It might be a tissue hanging down from your skin. It usually happens in the places where your skin gets folded or creases. Even irritatingly rubbing your clothes against the skin can lead to the growth of skin tags. Scientifically the condition is called acrochordons. Though it is completely harmless and does not even cause pain, it is embarrassing sometimes. Causes of skin tags:

Skin tags are caused by trapping of clusters of collagen and tiny blood vessels trapping in a small part of your skin.

Collagen is the main part of the connective tissue. It is a protein and is found in abundance in our bodies.

How to identify skin tags?

1. Do not confuse them with warts or moles.

Warts have irregular surface whereas skin tags are smooth and soft to touch.

Warts stick to the skin, but skin tags are more like hanging or protruding outwards.

Warts spread easily, they have outbreaks whereas skin tags do not.

Moles are usually made of a cluster of cells with color pigments. They are black or brownish in shade whereas skin tags are light pinkish, mostly the color of the skin.

When do skin tags start forming?

1. As you grow in age, the skin starts loosening up and in older people, due to the deficiency in elastic tissue and collagen, skin starts hanging faintly and starts thinning too. So it is most probable that old people and late adults may start developing skin tags.

3. People who are obese, have bad fats, have the tendency to develop skin tags in the fatty areas because the skin in that region folds very often.

Home remedies:

1. Use dental floss:

Cut off the blood supply to the skin tag so that it falls off. Tie the string of the dental floss around the skin tag tightly and leave it for some time. It gets dry and blood cannot make it to that part, hence it becomes dead tissue.

2.Apple Cider vinegar

This is the most commonly used method to remove skin tags because the acidity in the vinegar helps tp easily shrink the skin tag and hence get rid of it. If you use this technique on a regular basis, at least twice a day, it won’t take much time. Clean the area around the skin tag and apply the vinegar by using cotton dipped in it. Apply a bandage or tape over it so that the apple cider vinegar has complete exposure to the skin tag.

3.Banana peels:

Banana peels have skin tightening properties and a lot of antioxidants. Take the banana peel and rub it on the skin tag on a daily basis or you can leave it on overnight by strapping it to that area. The skin tag will become dry and get removed. These peels work because of the enzyme action they produce.

4.Baking soda

It has alkaline pH and can help you dry out your skin. Mix the baking soda with oils such as tea tree oil or castor oil to enhance its use. Apply the sticky paste on the skin tag. It is a mild exfoliant and can be a great help to get rid of them, it is also known to have a healing nature. Baking soda is one of the most common ingredients found in every household and its benefits are endless.


The ginger juice has 40 antioxidants and has anti-aging properties. It improves the elasticity of the skin and helps to maintain the pH. Take a cut piece of ginger and apply it on the skin tag, let the juice ooze out and spread it all over the skin tag. Apply it regularly for visible effects.

It is a medical term that means burning out or close off that part of your skin where the skin tag exists.

It completely destroys the tissue or un-natural growth. This process can be carried out using various methods.

a) Electrocautery:

It uses heat conduction from a metal probe heated by an electric current or sometimes using electrolysis. The electrically produces heat can cut, dry out, stop the bleeding from the skin tag.

b)Chemical cautery:

Chemicals do have bleaching actions. They can be used in areas where electric heat cannot be used. Chemical reactions have the power to destroy unnecessary tissue. Chemicals used for this treatment are silver nitrate, Trichloroacetic acid, and cantharidin.
