In England, there is a dividing line between artists and illustrators, who are thought inferior to painters. Well, that’s absolute rubbish. Some of the most creative work is being done in children’s books. In Japan, everything is art. They don’t say painting is better than ceramics or dress design. – Brian Wildsmith
In 2017, I embarked on a journey with the intention of transforming my battle with cancer into a visual art form. However, my initial plans took an unexpected turn when I discovered the captivating world of ceramics. This shift not only allowed me to express my emotions but also enabled me to uncover the profound beauty hidden within the clay.
As I delved into the realm of ceramics, I realized that it offered me a unique medium through which I could explore my creativity. With each piece, I found solace in the process of molding and shaping the clay, transforming it into something remarkable. My ceramics odyssey began as a personal endeavor but soon evolved into a profound exploration of beauty and resilience.
One of the most liberating aspects of working with clay is the freedom to experiment. Unlike other art forms, ceramics encourages spontaneity and improvisation. Through countless trials and errors, I uncovered the limitless potential of clay, discovering new techniques, colors, and textures along the way. Each experiment was a testament to the beauty of imperfection and the joy of exploration.
In the midst of uncertainty and adversity, ceramics became my sanctuary. The rhythmic motion of my hands, the earthy scent of clay, and the warmth of the kiln provided me with a sense of comfort and stability. Through the act of creation, I found solace in the beauty of the present moment, transcending the challenges that once seemed insurmountable.
My ceramics odyssey was not just a journey of self-expression but also a transformational experience. With each piece that emerged from the kiln, I discovered a newfound sense of purpose and resilience. What began as a dance with cancer evolved into a celebration of life, with clay serving as a symbol of hope, healing, and renewal.
As I continued to explore the possibilities of ceramics, I felt compelled to share my creations with others. Through exhibitions, workshops, and online platforms, I sought to inspire and uplift those who crossed paths with my work. Each piece carried with it a story of perseverance and transformation, inviting others to embark on their own creative odyssey.
In the words of Woody Allen, "Don’t think about making art; just get it done." My ceramics odyssey has taught me that true artistry lies not in the pursuit of perfection but in the willingness to embrace the unknown. Through clay, I have uncovered the beauty that resides within my struggles, and in doing so, have discovered a profound sense of purpose and joy. As my journey continues, I look forward to what new wonders the world of ceramics has in store.
