In terms of retro bowl gameplay, all you have to worry about is managing the offensive, which is actually rather good. The game replicates every play while you're on defense and keeps you informed of any new developments. The game is at its best when you have the ball and are attacking.

On offense, you can pre-snap before every play, so you don't have to worry about running or passing. Depending on how long the quarter is, you have either two or three timeouts every half. There are two timeouts every half while playing in one- or two-minute quarters, but three timeouts per half when playing in three-minute quarters.

Weather can also have an impact on games; for example, rain and snow can make it harder for some players to move quickly and increase the likelihood that they will fumble the ball. Where the ball lands on a PAT or field goal can also be influenced by the wind.
