Everything You Need to Know About Getting a TIN Certificate

In Bangladesh, a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a must-have for all taxpayers, whether involved in a small business, a salaried employee, a freelancer, or an entrepreneur. A TIN certificate is important for various financial & legal activities, like business registration, opening a bank account, applying for loans, etc. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) now allows applicants to register online for a TIN certificate called e-TIN.  NBR has a specific website for this, and you'll know how to get a TIN certificate in Bangladesh on that website.

If you want to obtain a TIN certificate in Bangladesh, this guide will help you through everything you need to know about obtaining a TIN certificate, including eligibility criteria, required documents, and step-by-step instructions for online and offline application methods.

What is a TIN Certificate

A TIN Certificate, a 12-digit unique identifier, confirms the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) issued by Bangladesh's National Board of Revenue (NBR). It is assigned to individuals or businesses for income tax and financial tracking. A TIN identification number is linked to all your tax records and is official proof that you're registered with the tax system and recognized as a taxpayer.

A TIN can be issued in two ways- Online or Offline. Online TIN is called e-TIN, where you can receive an e-TIN instantly via online registration.  For offline registration, you can go to the NBR Taxpayer Service Centre to obtain some paperwork to obtain a TIN certificate.

Who Needs a TIN and Why

Under the Income Tax Ordinance, 1984, NBR has requested every taxpayer to have a TIN Certificate since 2013. A TIN is not just a certificate to show while submitting a tax return. You will need a TIN certificate from the 2025–26 fiscal year to access 12 essential services like credit cards, trade licenses, and membership in professional or business bodies.

According to NBR guidelines and the Income Tax Act (2023), taxable individuals, government employees, private sector executives, business owners & professionals, and some other specific cases, a person legally must register for a TIN certificate. Individuals required to have a TIN can avail of 12 key services, as NBR accepts these service requests only if they have a TIN certificate. These services include new trade licences,  professional registrations, credit card issuance, post‑office savings above BDT 5 lakh, E-commerce operation licences, membership in trade bodies, etc.

Step‑by‑Step Guide to Getting a TIN in 2025

You can get a TIN certificate both online and offline. Here is how you can obtain a TIN certificate online.

e-TIN Certificate

To begin with, you need to create a user account at the official e-TIN portal at secure.incometax.gov.bd/TINHome. In that portal, you will find a register button for new users. Click new registration, and there will be a form you need to fill out with necessary information. You must fill out the registration form with a user ID (6+ characters), a strong password, a security question and answer, your mobile number, and your email address. After hitting the submit button, an activation code will be sent to your phone number. Enter the activation number, and you are done. Now you have created your e‑TIN login credentials.

Next, log in to the portal and fill registration form. To register, you can choose the taxpayer type: individual, company/firm, association/partnership, and others (non‑resident Bangladeshi, Hindu familial business, etc.). Answer the classified questions like resident vs expatriate, or salaried vs non‑salaried.

Your personal or business data needs to be filled in the right place. The form will require your full name, parents' names, DOB, NID/passport number, current/permanent addresses, nature of enterprise or source(s) of income, local zone/circle. Some supporting documents like a trade licence, club membership, and car registration might need to be uploaded. Then check whether all information is correct, as NBR will cross-check your details, and any misinformation or error can cause instant rejection. If done, click submit, and you are good to go. You'll receive an SMS or on-screen message indicating successful validation after submission.

A system‑generated 12‑digit TIN is assigned, and your e‑TIN certificate PDF is ready for download within seconds. There are no fees required for this process. And that's how you get a TIN certificate without leaving your home.

TIN Certificate (Offline)

You can also get a TIN certificate offline by visiting the NBR office in Bangladesh. Collect a form from the Tax Circle office of the NBR and fill the form with necessary information and attach some documents like a photocopy of your NID, two passport-sized photographs, a trade licence or a registrable profession licence, proof of address, and bank/account details required with the form. And, finally, submit the form to the counter. Your TIN certificate will be processed within 1-3 working days.

Conclusion

A TIN Certificate is an essential document for every taxable and employed person in Bangladesh, as 12 necessary services require a TIN certificate. Any individual can have the certificate online or offline, free of cost. This 12-digit number can help you and your business unlock many other government and private services in the country.
