Reconnecting with Roots: My 1981 Adventure in India and Nepal

In 1981, I embarked on a hitchhiking journey that would transform my life. Over two years, I traversed captivating landscapes and immersed myself in the culture, spending six unforgettable months in India and Nepal. The memories of those vibrant days and encounters with diverse cultures have lingered in my heart over the years, reminding me of the profound beauty and mystery of South Asia. Now, after decades, I am set to rekindle that spirit of exploration by returning to South India.

This time, I’ll be joined by my brother, Israel Gev, as we reunite in Auroville. Auroville, an intentional community near Pondicherry, was built upon ideals of peace, unity, and spiritual growth, making it an ideal place for us to reflect and reconnect before our next adventure together. Our plans? To journey to the Andaman Islands, where we’ll dive into the island’s underwater world for an exhilarating scuba experience.

The Allure of the Andaman Islands: A Scuba Diving Haven

The Andaman Islands have long intrigued me with their untouched beauty and serene, tropical ambiance. This archipelago, scattered across the Bay of Bengal, is not only blessed with white sand beaches and verdant jungles but is also a paradise for underwater explorers. The vibrant coral reefs and crystal-clear waters offer an unparalleled scuba diving experience, filled with the magic of marine life and the tranquility of deep, blue waters.

As Israel and I gear up for this adventure, the promise of exploring colorful reefs and encountering unique marine species is exhilarating. Diving into these waters feels like entering a whole new world – a world teeming with life and color, where every dive offers a different glimpse of the ocean's wonders.

A Spiritual Homecoming in Auroville

Before heading to the Andamans, reconnecting with my brother in Auroville will be a journey within itself. Auroville’s vision of unity and spiritual development resonates deeply with us, grounding us before we dive into the thrill of the islands. This community, founded on shared values and mutual respect, allows individuals from all over the world to live together in harmony. Walking through Auroville's peaceful paths, lined with banyan trees and surrounded by tranquil energy, brings back fond memories of my first journey to India, reaffirming my love for this region and its spirit.

Exploring Tamil Nadu and Kerala with Danna Sigal

After our island adventure, I’ll be joined by my beloved, Danna Sigal, as we set out to explore the beautiful states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. I am thrilled to experience these places with Danna, sharing the vibrant essence of South India with her. Tamil Nadu’s ancient temples, architectural marvels, and rich traditions offer a glimpse into a world that feels timeless. Every temple, from the intricate Dravidian towers of Madurai to the spiritual sanctity of Thanjavur, seems to tell its own story.

In contrast, Kerala awaits us with its lush landscapes and serene backwaters. We’ll explore the famed houseboats, winding through the tropical canals, while immersing ourselves in the flavors of Kerala’s rich cuisine, the soothing rhythm of the backwaters, and the region’s warm hospitality.

This journey back to South India feels like a reunion with an old friend – a chance to see how time has touched these places and how they, in turn, will shape me once more. I’m thrilled to witness the transformation of landscapes, to savor the evolution of flavors, and to delve into the stories carried by Tamil Nadu’s heritage and Kerala’s nature.

And as Israel, Danna, and I explore the Andaman Islands, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, I know that every step, every dive, and every shared moment will add to the tapestry of memories that make South India an enduring love of mine.
