Cisco’s Report Highlights Key Trends and Challenges in Industrial Networking
Industrial Networking: Cisco's Report Highlights Trends | CyberPro Magazine
In its inaugural “State of Industrial Networking” report, Cisco has shed light on the evolving landscape of industrial networking. The report emphasizes critical areas such as operational technology (OT) security and cybersecurity, revealing them as the foremost concerns for organizations navigating this sector. As cybersecurity increasingly becomes a pivotal challenge, the report also underscores the rising importance of IT/OT collaboration and the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping future industrial networks.
Industrial Networking: Rising Concerns in Cybersecurity and OT Security
Cisco’s report reveals that cybersecurity has emerged as a major challenge in the management of industrial networks. According to the 2024 findings, 89% of respondents view cybersecurity compliance as extremely important, reflecting a heightened awareness among Chief Information Officers (CIOs) about vulnerabilities within their operational infrastructure. Furthermore, 41% of firms report that their IT and OT teams operate independently, highlighting a significant gap in collaboration that could be addressed to improve overall network security and efficiency.
The need for enhanced collaboration between IT and OT teams is evident, as a unified approach could streamline operations and bolster decision-making processes. Additionally, the report forecasts that AI will significantly impact industrial networking in the coming years. Nearly 48% of respondents anticipate that AI will be pivotal for automating tasks, enhancing network performance, and offering predictive insights, making it a key area of investment.
Investment in Futureproofing and Overcoming Challenges
Organizations are actively seeking to futureproof their OT infrastructure, with notable emphasis on strengthening cybersecurity, advancing digital transformation, and investing in talent development. Cisco’s report highlights that 45% of respondents are prioritizing enhanced cybersecurity measures, while 41% are focusing on digital transformation initiatives, and 40% are investing in upskilling their workforce.
The report also identifies several macro-level challenges affecting industrial sectors, including skills shortages, inflation, and cybersecurity risks. A shortage of skilled workers is the top concern for 42% of respondents, followed closely by inflation at 40% and cybersecurity risks at 37%. These internal and external challenges are prompting organizations to invest more in OT and prioritize upskilling and improved collaboration.
In response to these issues, many firms are doubling down on their investments in OT. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents have increased their spending on industrial infrastructure over the past year, with a notable rise in investment among large businesses. For example, 24% of firms with revenues exceeding $30 billion reported significant increases in spending.
Embracing AI and Enhancing Collaboration
The integration of AI into industrial networks is becoming increasingly crucial as organizations seek to maximize the benefits of Industry 4.0. Cisco’s report underscores that AI is not only expected to improve IT/OT integration but also to enhance collaboration between IT and OT teams. Almost 49% of respondents anticipate better network management through AI, while 46% expect improved collaboration.
Moreover, leveraging OT data to enhance processes and energy management is gaining traction. Despite rising energy prices impacting profitability, a significant proportion of larger companies are using OT data to better manage energy, though smaller firms lag in this regard.
In conclusion, the Cisco report emphasizes the need for organizations to prioritize cybersecurity within their OT strategies. Failing to address cybersecurity effectively can lead to substantial resource expenditure on mitigation efforts, diverting focus from innovation and growth.
Furthermore, fostering IT/OT collaboration and harnessing AI is crucial for optimizing industrial networks, improving efficiency, and maintaining a competitive edge. As the landscape continues to evolve, embracing these changes will be essential for organizations aiming to navigate the complexities of modern industrial networking successfully.
