First things first, take your Linksys router out of the box. Inside, you'll find:
The router
Power adapter
Ethernet cable
Quick start guide
Now, plug the router into a power socket and switch it on. Wait for the power light to become stable. This is your sign that it’s ready to be tamed.
This is where most people go wrong, so listen carefully. Your internet service provider (ISP) has probably given you a modem or an ONT (for fiber users).
Now, you have two options:
Option A: Use another Ethernet cable to connect your PC/laptop directly to the router (for the most stable setup).
Option B: Connect wirelessly using the default Wi-Fi network printed on the sticker below your Linksys router.
Choose whatever suits you, but a wired connection is always better during setup.
Note: If someone else has used the router before, you might need to reset it using the small button at the back (press and hold for 10 seconds).
Linksys will try to make you use their Smart Setup wizard, but since we are going manual, just click on “Manual Configuration” or “Skip Setup” link.
Head over to the Wireless Settings section.
1. Change the Wi-Fi Name (SSID)
2. Choose a strong Wi-Fi password
3. Set the Security Mode to WPA2-Personal
4. Save and apply changes
You can also set different names and passwords for 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, if your router supports dual-band.
Now disconnect the Ethernet cable and connect to your new Wi-Fi network using your phone or laptop. Open YouTube or Instagram if it loads, you’re golden!
Still no internet? Here’s what to check:
To prevent your neighbor’s kid from logging in and messing things up, login to Linksys router, go to Administration > Management, and change the router’s admin password.
