Kundli matching, also known as Guna Milan, is a widely followed tradition in Indian marriages. Gun Milan, also known as Ashtakoota Milan, checks the compatibility between the prospective partners. People believe that the process can ensure a successful and happy married life. In simple words, it’s like a scoreboard based on 36 points. If a couple scores 18 or more, the match is generally considered acceptable.
These 36 points are divided into eight categories, known as Kootas in Vedic astrology. Each Koota assesses a different area of compatibility, such as physical, mental, sexual, and spiritual compatibility. The score a couple receives in each Koota is called the Guna. And so, the more score you get, the better your chances of living a smooth married life — it is popular belief.
But is that all there to it?
Is a high Guna score all you need for a happy marriage?
Let’s uncover the absolute truth behind this popular belief!
Guna matching, also known as Kundli Milan, is used to determine if two people can make a good partner for a happy married life. It is done by comparing their birth charts. In this system, a total of 36 Gunas (points) can be matched. The more Gunas match, the better the understanding and bond between the couple.
These Gunas are linked to our nature and behaviour. They fall into three types:
Sattvik
Rajas
Tamas
You may have heard that if 18 or more Gunas match out of 36, the marriage is good to go. But wait — that’s not the complete truth. Guna Matching is just one part of a big process. It shows surface-level compatibility but doesn’t tell the whole story.
In today’s digital age, we have changed ways to meet and connect with people. We are often charmed by simply scrolling through pictures and brief bios of people, and we quickly form opinions about them even without truly knowing the person.
While looks, thinking patterns and emotional connections are important for a good relationship, they’re not the only things that matter. We often forget that energies surround us all and play significant role in shaping relationships.
A successful and lasting marriage depends on deeper astrological factors like the Moon sign (Rashi), zodiac compatibility, role of important planets (Karakas), Nakshatras (birth stars), and the time periods called Dashas and transits of planets. It can even bring back your hidden ties from past lives and karmic influences.
That’s why horoscope matching isn’t just an old tradition — it’s a thoughtful process to understand how two people connect spiritually, emotionally, and energetically before tying a knot.
Out of 36 Gunas, 21 points come from just three Doshas:
· Nadi Dosha
· Bhakoot Dosha
· Gana Dosha
If these three match, people often say, “Yes, go ahead with the marriage.”
But what if the couple has serious issues in their planetary positions (Kundli Doasha) or timing (Dasha)?
Guna score doesn’t show that.
If you think Guna matching and complete birth chart analysis for marriage are the same thing, then that’s only half true. Just checking the Guna score is not enough. It covers only about 20% of what proper Kundli matching really includes. If you depend only on the points shown by an online calculator, it may still lead to problems in marriage. A happy married life needs complete horoscope matching, which checks many other things like planet positions, doshas, and their effects — not just the score out of 36.
Matching Kundli is like checking whether you and your partner are naturally made for each other. Sometimes, a person may look perfect from the outside, but their birth chart may reveal something very different. A detailed Kundli analysis helps uncover hidden things about one’s personality, emotions, and how they may behave in married life. That’s why it’s important to consult an experienced astrologer who can deeply study both charts — not just depend on free online calculators that only show surface-level results.
One common fear in Kundli matching is Mangal Dosha (Manglik Dosh). Many people get rejected for being Manglik.
But did you know?
Over 75% of people labelled Manglik are not truly Manglik!
Even if one person is Manglik, their partner’s chart might cancel or balance it out.
Guna Milan is like a first glance — it gives us a general idea of how two people might get along by scoring their compatibility out of 36 points. But marriage isn’t just about the surface. That’s where the Navamsha chart (D9 chart) comes in. Often called the soul of the birth chart, it offers a much deeper and more honest view of a person’s nature after marriage — how committed they’ll be, how they handle emotional closeness, and what their relationship might truly feel like over time. Many astrologers overlook this chart, but no horoscope matching is complete without considering it. Even if two people score well in Guna Milan, the Navamsha might reveal hidden issues or karmic debts that Guna matching alone can’t show. That’s why expert astrologers always consider the Navamsha — it’s like putting the marriage under a microscope to see what really lies down.
In marriage predictions, Jupiter and Venus are the natural Karaka for marriage. Their placements in both the D-1 and D-9 charts matter a lot in determining marriage compatibility. Analysing their position helps in identifying how a person will behave in marriage — their values, expectations, emotional maturity, and ability to maintain marital harmony. Even if the Guna Milan score is high or low, weak Karakas can lead to married life issues. That’s why Karaka matching is a crucial step in Kundli matching, providing a clearer view of a long-term relationship.
Famous astrologers like Dr. Vinay Bajrangi don’t stop at Guna Milan. He also checks:
· The position of planets in D-1 and D-9 charts
· Karaka matching
· Nakshatras (constellations)
· Their Dashas (timing of events)
· And practical compatibility between two people
All of this helps in understanding the real reasons why a marriage might work or not.
Don’t say “Yes” or “No” to marriage based only on Guna scores.
Guna Matching is a good starting point, but a comprehensive Kundli analysis by an expert astrologer is necessary to see the bigger picture.
A good marriage depends on love, understanding and support analyzed through the right astrological process — not through getting more or less points out of 36 Gunas!
