Cricket, being a game that has evolved with time, has a strong base of incorporating technology in the game, promoting fairness, and involving fans. The additional lighting called LED stumps has a major life-enhancing role in the Indian Premier League (IPL), along with other important cricket tournaments.
But, the main concern that most cricketing fans have is that of IPL Stump price as they are quite expensive. Let us discuss what goes behind the making of such devices.
Before we talk about anything else, it is very important to know what are LED stumps in the world of cricket. Unlike conventional wooden stumps, LED stumps are equipped with very sophisticated electronic parts.
The set includes LED lights, sensors, and microprocessors, which together function at the instant moment in sensing the variations. The bails and stumps illuminate immediately once they displace, offering a clear sight for the umpire and spectators. This kind of accuracy needs greater engineering, and, thus, adds to the cost.
LED stumps are manufactured by using high-quality raw materials, which are very strong and last long even on extreme impacts of a fast-paced game. Such kinds of materials include composite plastics and some lightweight metals, which ensure the longevity and reliability required in a perfect match.
Traditional wooden stumps are inexpensive; however, the additional reinforcements that electronic components would require render these stumps costlier to manufacture.
The biggest question that has troubled fans ever since they have seen bowlers breaking these stumps is how much they cost.
The price may vary based on different factors, like the quality of the stumps, the manufacturer, and the location. Well, a set of LED stumps, which has bails, which is manufactured by Zing International, costs around $40,000 meaning ₹30 lakhs to ₹35 lakhs in India. You would be surprised to know that a pair of Zing bails alone costs ₹50,000.
Other manufacturers, like StumpVision and Intelliconn, offer LED stumps in the price range of $5,000 to $20,000 [₹4 lakhs to ₹16 lakhs].
Fortunately, the BCCI or any board doesn't buy these expensive LED stumps. The BCCI has signed a long contract with Zing International to supply these stumps. These LED stumps are provided on rent to the BCCI by the Australian company for both international matches in India and the IPL.
As per The Federal, BCCI paid approximately Rs. 1.60 crores and Rs. 2 crores to Zing International for IPL 2021 and IPL 2022, respectively.
The stumps and bails will be maintained by Zing, according to the contract. And in case a stump is broken during the match, as we have seen numerous times, the organizers bear the cost of stumps.
Despite the high cost of the stumps, they remain the top-notch innovation adding fervour to the game. You can also look up other high-end technology used in the league on the website Sportzbuzz.
