Anatomy Matters: Special Variety Needs

Raw gallon count is only half the battle. If you are keeping highly modified fancy varieties, our calculator takes their specific physical traits into account:

• Veiltail Goldfish: Their magnificent, flowing fins make them incredibly clumsy swimmers. If your filter creates a massive, swirling current, they will exhaust themselves trying to stay upright. They require baffled, gentle water flow and an environment entirely free of sharp plastic plants or jagged rock edges that can shred their delicate fins.
• Bubble Eye Goldfish: These fish carry fluid-filled sacs right beneath their eyes that are incredibly fragile. A rough piece of driftwood or a coarse gravel substrate can easily rupture these sacs, opening the door to severe bacterial infections. They do best in bare-bottom tanks or setups with completely smooth, rounded river stones.
• Telescope Eye Goldfish: Because their eyes protrude so far forward, their depth perception and vision are incredibly poor. They are slow, blind feeders. If you house them with fast, sleek common goldfish, they will lose the race to the food every single time and slowly starve. Keep them exclusively with other slow-moving fancies.

Blueprint for a Healthy Setup

If you want your fish to thrive for years, you must execute your setup in the correct biological order.

1. Prioritize Footprint Over Height: When buying a tank, always choose a "Long" or "Breeder" style over a tall, column-style tank. Goldfish swim side-to-side, not up and down. A wider tank also provides a much larger surface area where toxic gases can escape and fresh oxygen can enter the water.
2. Over-Specify Your Filtration: Do not buy a filter that is rated exactly for your tank size. If you have a 30-gallon tank, buy a filter rated for a 60 or 75-gallon system. You want a filter capable of turning over the entire volume of your tank at least 4 to 8 times every single hour.
3. Execute a Strict Fishless Cycle: Never buy a tank and the fish on the same day. You must run the tank with a simulated waste source (like pure ammonia) for several weeks before adding your fish. This allows colonies of beneficial, life-saving bacteria to grow inside your filter sponge. These bacteria are what break down toxic fish waste into harmless compounds.
4. Perform Partial Water Changes: Never strip down your tank and replace 100% of the water. Doing so shocks the fish and kills off your beneficial bacteria, forcing your tank to restart its biological cycle from zero. Instead, use a gravel vacuum to remove 10% to 25% of the water every single week, replacing it with fresh, temperature-matched water treated with a quality dechlorinator.
