What are the major immigration programs to apply for Canada PR in 2025-26?

Some of the major programs that allow immigrants to apply for a Canada PR Visa in 2025 are as follows:

Express Entry Program

The Express Entry is one of the fastest pathways to apply for Canadian PR. It is a point-based program that manages the profiles of the candidates of immigrants who have applied under the following economic immigration program:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

• Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

• Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Immigrants must first pass the 67-point eligibility system to apply under this program. There are some eligibility factors, such as age, work experience, language skills, adaptability, and more. Once a candidate scores 67 points or higher, they become eligible for the Express Entry program to apply.

The Express Entry system uses a ranking system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which gives points to each applicant’s profile based on specific factors. These points determine the profile’s position in the CRS pool system. Applicants with the highest scores receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence from Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Once an ITA is received, candidates have 60 days to submit their complete application to the IRCC.

Provincial Nomination Program (PNP)

Each province and territory in Canada has its own immigration program, known as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), which allows them to nominate skilled and qualified immigrants to live and work in that specific region. These programs are designed to meet the province’s unique labor market needs and have different requirements and eligibility criteria.

There are two main ways an immigrant can apply for a provincial nomination:

1. Direct Application to the Province: Immigrants who wish to settle in a particular province can apply directly by creating a profile on the province’s official immigration website. Once the profile is submitted, it is assessed based on the province’s eligibility factors. If selected for nomination, the applicant will need to create an Express Entry profile and include their provincial nomination in it.

2. Through the Express Entry System: Immigrants can also apply through the federal Express Entry program. To do this, candidates must create an Express Entry profile and submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), indicating the province they want to live in. The candidate’s profile is then shared with the selected provincial immigration office, where it is evaluated according to their specific requirements. If chosen, the provincial nomination is added to the candidate’s Express Entry profile.

Occupation in-Demand stream 2025-2026

Every province has different occupations that are in demand in the province. Every immigration office of that particular province releases a list that contains the names of the occupations that are in demand at that particular period of time in that province. These in-demand occupation lists signify the shortage of labor in that particular field of work. If the immigrant has work experience in any of the occupations that are listed in the occupation in-demand list, they can apply under this stream. Every province regularly updates their occupation in-demand lists, and immigrants have to be regularly updated about their occupation to be listed.

In both cases, if the immigrant is able to land a provincial nomination, they are awarded 600 CRS points. These many points are more than enough to land an invitation to apply to apply for a permanent residence visa to the Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Every provincial nomination program has different immigration streams that allow them to nominate especially skilled immigrants in a particular field of work. One of the major immigration streams that are found in every provincial nomination program is the occupation in-demand stream.

 National Occupational Classification (NOC) in Canada

Immigration, Refugees & Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has started this system to standardize and nationally recognize the work experience of foreign-skilled immigrants. The National Occupational Classification (NOC) uses a four-digit code and job description for every occupation/job in Canada. Every job is categorized into the following skill types:

• Skill Type 0: Management jobs such as restaurant managers, mine managers, etc.

• Skill Type A: Professional jobs that usually need a degree, such as doctors, dentists, etc.

• Skill Type B: Technical jobs and skilled trades that usually need a diploma or training as an apprentice, such as chef, plumbers, electricians, etc.

• Skill Type C: Intermediate jobs that need high school/ job-specific training like industrial butchers etc.

• Skill Type: D: Labor jobs that give on-the-job training, like fruit pickers, cleaning staff, etc.
