The first time I visited Ladakh, I was prepared for a land filled with dramatic scenery, passes, and roads. But the peace that one derives from visiting the monasteries was the last thing I had expected. These monasteries are not mere structures for worship, but are instead an experience that lasts much beyond one’s visit.

While looking out for the best leh ladakh tour packages, one can see that most of these packages have visits to certain monasteries included in them. And now I know why they do so. As each monastery is unique and carries a special aura about itself, here are some of the popular monasteries that one should never miss in Ladakh.

Hemis Monastery: The Largest and Most Celebrated

The first stop on my itinerary was Hemis Monastery, and quite frankly, it made a statement right from the start. Hemis is situated at a distance of around 45 km from Leh and is regarded as the biggest monastery in Ladakh.

I remember walking around the courtyard of Hemis and getting a sense of timelessness. The walls here have beautiful paintings, and prayer flags hang delicately in the wind blowing from the mountains. In case you visit Hemis during the Hemis Festival, then you will experience colorful dances and festivities.

It is common to find Hemis Monastery in any leh ladakh tour package.

Thiksey Monastery: A Mini Potala Palace

Thiksey monastery is one of my favorite destinations. From afar, the monastery looks like the Potala palace at Lhasa. It is built on a hill and is majestic and almost surreal amidst the barren land of Ladakh.

I got there very early in the morning when the prayer was ongoing. It was an experience that will be etched in my memory forever. The chants, the smell of the incense, and the morning sun were so surreal.

make sure you include Thiksey in your list of places to visit when you go for a leh ladakh tour package.

Diskit Monastery: Serenity in Nubra Valley

My experience during my trip to Nubra Valley was greatly influenced by the Diskit Monastery, which is situated atop a hill with an amazing view of the entire valley.

For me, what really caught my attention is the colossal statue of Maitreya Buddha that looks over the valley. In the calm silence, you can find yourself filled with tranquility and introspection. It is one of those rare sites that will make you appreciate its surroundings and allow you to savor its beauty.

In leh ladakh tour packages that include Nubra Valley, you will not miss visiting the Diskit Monastery.

Lamayuru Monastery: The Moonland Experience

Lamayuru Monastery has no comparison to anything that I have ever seen before. Situated on the Leh-Srinagar highway, the monastery stands amidst lunar-like landscapes which is why it has been named Moonland.

While exploring this place, I got mesmerized by its old architectural beauty and peaceful environment. Visiting Lamayuru can be quite an adventurous activity for you as one comes across some incredible sights en route.

So, if you are a traveler who prefers out-of-the-way places, it would be best for you to opt for leh ladakh tour packages.

Alchi Monastery: A Hidden Artistic Gem

Alchi Monastery proved to be a very nice surprise for me. Unlike other monasteries in Ladakh which are situated atop hills, Alchi Monastery is situated on plains.

The reason behind its uniqueness is the artworks here. The walls of Alchi Monastery have elaborate paintings and engravings which date back to centuries ago. It felt like an art gallery rather than a monastery while I was spending hours appreciating the details of the art works.

Unfortunately, not all tour packages of leh ladakh include Alchi Monastery, yet you should take this opportunity if possible.

Spituk Monastery: Close Yet Captivating

Spituk Monastery is just a short distance from Leh and is often skipped by tourists but should not be. I was fortunate enough to visit it on my first day of acclimatization, and it ended up being a great choice.

This place provides breathtaking views of Leh and its surrounding mountains. It is serene, less crowded, and ideal if you need a peaceful beginning to your adventure.

For those who have limited time, there are numerous leh ladakh tour packages that include Spituk as one of their stops.

Shey Monastery: A Blend of History and Spirituality

One such monastery is Shey Monastery, which served as the summer capital of Ladakh. It boasts an imposing figure in the form of a golden Buddha statue.

The best part of Shey was its simplicity. Though not as opulent as some other monasteries, Shey had a grounded and humble aura that I resonated with deeply.

Shey Monastery is usually included in tours that cover Leh and Ladakh together with Thiksey and Hemis monasteries.

More Than Just Monasteries

I discovered that monasteries are more than tourist sites as I visited different monasteries; rather, they are living structures where monks meditate, learn, and uphold centuries-old traditions.

Every monastery was teaching me something—patience, silence, and gratitude. Moreover, considering how spiritually charged the surroundings of Ladakh are in themselves, the addition of the monasteries is something special altogether.

Final Thoughts: A Journey Within

In retrospect, one of the most memorable things from this journey to Ladakh is certainly visiting these monasteries. It is not all about going from one place to another but living the experience.

While researching for your leh ladakh tour packages and preparing your itinerary, remember that visiting these monasteries and spending time in them will definitely pay off.

It might be just as memorable as seeing the beauty of its lakes or riding bikes around it.
