Muharram is not just the first month of the Islamic calendar—it is one of the four sacred months in Islam. It holds deep spiritual, historical, and emotional value for Muslims worldwide. As Muharram 2025 approaches, it becomes crucial for believers to understand its significance, practice its traditions, and reflect on the lessons it carries.
In this blog, we will explore the essence of Muharram, the importance of Ashura 2025, how Muslims in the UK and globally prepare for it, and how you can make a meaningful difference through charity during this sacred month.
Muharram 2025 is expected to begin on Saturday, 28th June 2025, depending on moon sighting. The Islamic calendar follows the lunar system, so dates may vary slightly by region.
🔟 When Is 10th Muharram 2025 (Ashura)?
The 10th of Muharram 2025, also known as Ashura, is expected to fall on Monday, 7th July 2025. This day is one of the most revered in Islamic history due to its many powerful events.
The word Muharram itself means “forbidden,” indicating that war and violence were traditionally prohibited during this sacred month. It is a time for peace, reflection, worship, and spiritual renewal.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described Muharram as:
“The best of fasting after Ramadan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This shows that Muharram is not just another Islamic month—it’s one where voluntary acts of worship, particularly fasting in Muharram, are highly rewarded.
Ashura is a day of immense historical and spiritual depth.
Ashura marks the day Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel were saved from Pharaoh’s army when Allah split the Red Sea. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ fasted on this day and encouraged others to do the same.
"Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it."
(Sahih Muslim)
He also advised fasting on either the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th to distinguish the Muslim practice from others.
Ashura is a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of the Prophet ﷺ. He and his companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala for standing against oppression and injustice. His sacrifice remains a symbol of resistance, integrity, and faith.
Whether you follow Sunni or Shia traditions, Muharram 2025 is a time to increase your connection to Allah. Here are common practices during this month:
Fasting on Ashura and optionally the day before or after is a Sunnah that carries the reward of wiping out a year’s worth of sins.
Muslims increase acts of worship, remembrance (dhikr), and personal reflection. It's a time to reset spiritual goals for the new Islamic year.
It is Sunnah to increase charity in sacred months. Whether it’s helping the needy with food, supporting orphans, or donating a water well, every act of giving counts in the sight of Allah.
For many, especially the Shia community, Muharram is a time of mourning, lectures (majlis), and processions in remembrance of Imam Hussain (RA).
In the UK, Muharram 2025 will likely begin on 28th June, with Ashura 2025 on 7th July. Local mosques and Islamic centers often organize special events, lectures, and community fasts to mark the occasion. UK Muslims take this opportunity to engage in spiritual growth and community service.
Muharram isn’t just about remembrance—it’s about action. While fasting and praying benefit you spiritually, charity benefits others physically and emotionally. It’s the perfect time to give Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity)—a deed that continues to reward you even after death.
One of the best forms of Sadaqah Jariyah is donating a water well in underserved communities. Clean water is a basic necessity, yet millions still live without it. You can change that this Muharram.
