Provide a daytime basking spot of about 100–110°F for juveniles and 95–110°F for adults, with a cool side of 75–85°F and nighttime temps no lower than 65–75°F. Use a dedicated basking lamp plus a high-quality 10% UVB (T5 HO or equivalent) running 10–12 hours per day and replaced according to manufacturer life (commonly every 6–12 months).

Feed juveniles daily with a high proportion of protein (gut-loaded insects) and daily dark leafy greens; subadults should get insects every other day and increasing greens; adults typically receive a diet that is ~20% insects and 80% vegetables, offered 3–5 times per week depending on body condition. Always gut-load and dust insects with calcium (without vitamin D3 if UVB is adequate) and provide a multivitamin supplement weekly.

Prevent MBD by combining correct UVB exposure (quality 10% T5 HO or equivalent) with a balanced calcium supplementation schedule and a diet rich in bioavailable calcium (calcium-rich greens and appropriately sized insects). Monitor behavior and posture for early signs, maintain proper temperatures for digestion, and replace UVB bulbs on schedule—these three controls (UVB, diet, heat) are the primary preventive measures.

Most keepers transition the enclosure size and start shifting the diet at around 9–12 months when growth slows and the dragon reaches near-adult length; begin gradually increasing greens and reducing insect-fed protein at that point. Evaluate body condition monthly—if the dragon looks overweight or underweight, adjust proportions and consult a reptile-savvy vet.

Cohabitation is generally discouraged because bearded dragons are territorial and stress, dominance injuries, and competition for heat/food are common; same-sex pairs sometimes tolerate each other but risk remains high. If housing multiple dragons, provide separate identical setups or partitioned enclosures to eliminate competition for basking spots and food.

Perform spot cleaning daily (remove feces and shed), a partial clean weekly (sanitize food/water dishes, replace substrate in high-traffic areas), and a full enclosure deep clean every 1–3 months depending on substrate type and bioactive setup. For deep cleaning, move the animal to a secure holding, remove all décor, disinfect hard surfaces with a reptile-safe disinfectant, rinse thoroughly, and rebuild with fresh substrate and hides.

Early warning signs include lethargy, reduced appetite, changes in stool, swollen joints or limbs, tremors, visible deformities, repeated mouth gaping or discharge, and weight loss. See a reptile-experienced veterinarian immediately for persistent symptoms—delaying care for issues like impaction, MBD, parasites, or respiratory infections can rapidly become life-threatening.

Safe options include reptile carpet, ceramic tile, non-adhesive shelf liner, and well-managed bioactive substrates with coarse sand mixes recommended by experienced keepers; avoid loose fine sands, walnut shell, and untested soil mixes for juveniles due to impaction risk. Choose substrate based on age: juveniles do better on tile or carpet to eliminate impaction risk, while adults can use carefully sourced or prepared bioactive mixes.

With consistent, appropriate husbandry, most bearded dragons live 8–12 years, while some individuals reach 12–15+ years under optimal veterinary care and nutrition. Lifespan depends strongly on early-life nutrition, UVB exposure, and prompt treatment of common illnesses.
