Position hides so the gecko can move between temperature zones without crossing open, exposed areas.

Leopard geckos are crepuscular and do not require strong UVB like some diurnal reptiles, but low-level UVB (2.0–5.0) can provide welfare benefits and support vitamin D3 synthesis when diet is inadequate. Many keeper vets recommend including a low-output UVB strip and ensuring dietary calcium is properly supplemented and dusted.

Spot-clean feces and uneaten food daily, replace soiled substrate or paper weekly for hygiene, and perform a full disinfection (remove all decor, scrub, and use a reptile-safe disinfectant) every 1–3 months depending on stocking and substrate. Keep a cleaning log and isolate new or sick animals to reduce cross-contamination.

The leading husbandry errors are inadequate heat gradients (causing metabolic problems), incorrect substrate leading to impaction, and prolonged high humidity or damp substrates causing respiratory infections. Juveniles need smaller, more intensively heated enclosures with slightly higher nighttime temps and more frequent feeding (daily to every other day) to support rapid growth, while adults are fed less often (2–3 times per week) and benefit from larger territories and more enrichment. Substrate safety is even more critical for juveniles because of higher impaction risk.
