After completing the Everest Three Pass Trek recently, I was looking for a short and easy trek to relax and enjoy the mountains without pushing too hard. We didn’t want something too long or physically demanding this time. After a high-altitude adventure like the Three Passes Trek, we wanted to slow down and enjoy the simple things — green hills, sunrise views, and friendly locals. The Ghorepani Ghandruk Trek turned out to be the perfect option.
It’s also great for beginners or anyone short on time. You don’t need to be super fit, and the trail is well-marked with good places to stay and eat.
How Difficult Is the Ghorepani Ghandruk Trek?
To be honest, this trek is not very hard. It’s a moderate trek that almost anyone can do with basic fitness. We walked 4 to 6 hours a day on average. Some parts of the trail have stone steps, especially the climb to Ulleri, which can feel a bit tough if you're not used to hiking. But we took our time and rested when needed.
The highest point of the trek is Poon Hill (3,210 meters). It’s a popular viewpoint where people go early in the morning to watch the sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The climb to Poon Hill is steep but short — about 45 minutes from Ghorepani. It was a bit tiring but totally worth it. The view from the top was one of the best I’ve ever seen.
Day-by-Day Trek Overview
We started our trek from Nayapul after a short drive from Pokhara. Here’s how our journey went:
Day 1: Drive to Nayapul, then trek to Tikhedhunga or Ulleri. A mix of road and stone steps.
Day 2: Trek to Ghorepani. This part has more uphill but is steady and peaceful.
Day 3: Early morning hike to Poon Hill, then trek to Tadapani. Lots of ups and downs through forests.
Day 4: Trek to Ghandruk, a lovely village with amazing views.
Day 5: Walk down to Nayapul and drive back to Pokhara.
We stayed in simple teahouses with good food and warm beds. The trail was safe, clean, and full of friendly faces.
Tips for a Smooth Trek
If you're planning to do this trek, here are a few tips to make it easier:
Start your day early to avoid strong sun and get to your lodge on time.
Carry a walking stick if you have trouble with steps.
Stay hydrated and take small breaks often.
Pack light, as the trek doesn’t go very high and doesn’t need heavy gear.
Bring a camera, because the sunrise from Poon Hill is unforgettable.
