SAP BDC Certification in 2026: One Two-Hour Scenario, and the Gap Your Background Leaves
Updated 13 October 2026
Almost nobody arrives at the SAP BDC certification as a beginner. People come to it from SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW), from SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud, from Databricks, or from a finance or supply chain desk where they have used the reports for years. Each of those routes covers part of the exam well and leaves a different part uncovered.
That matters more than usual here, because the exam is a single conversation. C_BCBDC, formally "SAP Certified - SAP Business Data Cloud", is one scenario-based assessment lasting two hours. There is no long paper in which a strong area can quietly outweigh a weak one. This guide sets out the published rules, then maps what each background already brings and what it still has to add.
What is the SAP BDC certification in 2026?
The SAP BDC certification is exam C_BCBDC, a scenario-based assessment made up of one activity, with a two-hour duration and a 60% pass score. It confirms foundational knowledge of SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP BDC) at project-team level.
Those figures come from SAP's C_BCBDC certification page on SAP Learning, checked on 13 October 2026. The same page describes the purpose in SAP's own words: the certification "provides evidence that you have developed foundational knowledge of SAP Business Data Cloud" and that you have "the essential skills needed to contribute as part of a project team."
| Rule | What SAP publishes (checked 13 October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Exam code | C_BCBDC |
| Assessment type | Scenario Based |
| Activities | 1 |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Pass score | 60% |
| Languages, roleplay with AI guidance | English, Spanish, Italian, French, Japanese and 25 more |
| Languages, record a video | English only |
| Recommended preparation | Learning journey "Exploring SAP Business Data Cloud" |
SAP's page does not list a fee, a topic weighting or a fixed number of attempts. It says attempts are shown on the exam page itself and that each exam attempt counts as one attempt from your SAP Learning Hub subscription.
What are the rules on exam day?
You complete the scenario as a timed roleplay with an AI avatar or as a recorded video for manual review. The exam is open book: SAP recommends SAP Help Portal, SAP Learning, SAP Community and SAP Joule for Consultants.
SAP's Certification practical exams FAQ, checked on 13 October 2026, describes the scenario-based type as a "timeboxed roleplay with an AI avatar to pitch SAP solutions, advise on architecture, and perform other simulations." Learners who prefer not to use the AI tool can upload a video instead. The FAQ adds two scoring details worth knowing before you choose:
- In AI-supported scenarios, an AI model may help assess "the accuracy, completeness, and efficiency of responses."
- For video uploads, SAP experts score the recording within 10 business days.
The language difference is practical. The roleplay route is offered in 30 languages on SAP's page, while the video route is English only. The FAQ also places this exam among the first of its kind: practical exams for SAP Business Data Cloud users were part of the rollout that started in November 2025.
Open book does not mean slow. Two hours with one stakeholder leaves room to confirm a detail, but not to learn an architecture during the conversation.
What does the C_BCBDC exam cover?
The exam covers six areas that SAP lists as the outcomes of its recommended learning journey: the business challenges, the use cases, the architecture, SAP BW modernization, intelligent applications and data products, and data sharing with SAP Databricks.

According to SAP's "Exploring SAP Business Data Cloud" learning journey page, checked on 13 October 2026, a prepared candidate can:
- Describe the business challenges that SAP Business Data Cloud addresses
- List use cases for the product
- Outline its architecture
- Describe the path to SAP BW modernization
- Discover, install and extend intelligent applications and data products
- Share SAP data with SAP Databricks to develop machine learning insights
One naming detail trips people up. SAP's launch press release of 13 February 2025 called the packaged analytics offerings "insight apps". The learning journey now calls them "intelligent applications". Use the current term in the exam, and recognise the earlier one when you meet it in older material.
Which part of the exam does your background leave out?
Every common route into SAP Business Data Cloud covers two or three of the six areas well and leaves at least one thin. Find your row, then spend your study hours on the last column.

| Your background | What you already bring | What is usually thin | Study this first |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAP BW modeler or administrator | Data flows, modeling discipline, the current landscape | Data products, the open data ecosystem, business framing | Open data ecosystem course |
| SAP Datasphere or SAP Analytics Cloud analyst | Modeling in the cloud, stories, dashboards | The BW modernization path, provisioning | BW transformation course |
| Databricks or data engineering | Lakehouse concepts, machine learning workloads, sharing | SAP business semantics, intelligent applications, BW | Introduction and architecture courses |
| Functional consultant or business user | Process knowledge, the questions executives ask | Architecture vocabulary, every technical area | Architecture course, then use cases |
If you come from SAP BW
Your advantage is the largest single block of the learning journey. SAP's page lists the course "Transforming SAP BW with SAP Business Data Cloud" at more than 4 hours, built around what SAP calls the Optimize-Modernize-Innovate approach. Your risk is answering every question as a BW question. A stakeholder who asks how a planning team will get governed finance data wants to hear about data products, not about process chains.
If you come from SAP Datasphere or SAP Analytics Cloud
You already think in models and stories, and both products appear in the learning journey's product list. The thin area is the customer who still runs SAP BW and wants to know what happens to years of content. Learn the modernization path well enough to explain it in order, with a reason for each step.
If you come from Databricks or data engineering
You will be comfortable with the sharing and machine learning outcome. What you need is the SAP side of the sentence: why data that keeps its business context is worth more than data that has been extracted and rebuilt. SAP's press release makes exactly this point about its managed data products, which "maintain their original business context and semantics."
If you are a functional consultant or business user
SAP lists Business User among the roles for this certification, so you belong here. Your strength is the first two outcomes, challenges and use cases. Your gap is naming the components and saying what each one does. Aim for a plain architecture explanation you can give in two minutes without notes.
How long does it take to prepare for the SAP BDC certification?
SAP's recommended learning journey lists four courses totalling about seven hours of content, with no prerequisites and an intermediate level. Realistic preparation is longer, because explaining the material aloud takes more practice than reading it.

| Course (code) | Listed length | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Introducing SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC100) | 1 hr+ | Introduction to the product |
| Developing Detailed Knowledge of SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC150) | 1 hr+ | Technology and architecture |
| Transforming SAP BW with SAP Business Data Cloud (BDCBW1) | 4 hr+ | Modernizing a BW landscape |
| Introducing the Open Data Ecosystem for SAP Business Data Cloud (BDCODE) | 57 min | The open data ecosystem |
Source: SAP's learning journey page, checked 13 October 2026. Notice the proportion. The BW course alone is more than half of the listed hours. SAP publishes no topic weighting for the exam, so this is a signal about emphasis in the learning material, not a scoring rule. Still, a candidate who skips BW modernization because "we never ran BW" is skipping the biggest block of the recommended content.
A workable plan for most backgrounds is two to three weeks: one week on the courses, with your thin area first, and the rest on speaking practice.
Why does SAP test Business Data Cloud as a conversation?
SAP tests it as a conversation because the product is sold and implemented through conversations about business value, and because SAP has redesigned its certifications around applied capability. The exam asks you to advise, not to recite.
The product's own launch language shows what a stakeholder cares about. In SAP's press release of 13 February 2025, SAP CEO Christian Klein said: "SAP Business Data Cloud unleashes the full value of enterprise data for Business AI." In the same release, Ali Ghodsi, Co-founder and CEO of Databricks, said: "Every company on the planet wants to get more value out of their data and greater returns on their AI investments."
Neither sentence is about a feature. Both are about value, which is the level at which a scenario opens. The release also gives a usable example: a chief financial officer who wants to assess the effect of rising inflation on profitability, combining external consumer price index data with financial data products such as general ledger accounts or cost centers. Practise explaining that example in your own words.
The wider certification context points the same way. Writing in an SAP News feature dated 15 May 2026, Andre Bechtold, president of SAP Industries and Experiences, stated: "In this sense, data architecture is no longer a back-end concern; it is a core enabler of enterprise transformation." The same feature reports more than 100 certifications in the performance-based model, more than 100,000 exams already completed under it, and a 33% year-over-year rise in participation in SAP learning.
How do you rehearse a scenario you cannot predict?
You rehearse the skill, not the script: stating a position, giving the reason, and holding it when someone pushes back. Reading alone does not build that, so preparation needs spoken or written practice against a counterpart.

Three exercises work for every background:
- The two-minute architecture. Explain the product's building blocks and how they relate, aloud, with a timer. Repeat until you no longer reach for notes.
- The reversed question. Take each of the six learning outcomes and turn it into a client objection, for example "Why should we modernize BW at all?" Answer in four sentences.
- The look-up drill. Practise finding one fact in SAP Help Portal in under a minute, so open book stays a safety net.
For the pushback itself, ERPPrep's Scenario Roleplay is built for scenario-based assessment exams such as C_BCBDC, and is not offered for system-based exams. It is a written practice conversation in which an AI character plays the client stakeholder in an original business case. The flow has five steps: a scenario brief, your clarifying questions, your recommendation and defense, stakeholder pushback, and a graded debrief. During the pushback the AI refers back to what you committed to earlier and never confirms or corrects your answer.
The debrief gives each objective a band from 1 to 5, with explanations that quote your own words. It is described as "a study signal, not a verdict", and the scores reflect ERPPrep's criteria, not SAP's. A free sample roleplay is available before buying. The practice material for this exam is organised into 242 skill drills across six domains, the largest being SAP BW modernization with 46 drills, according to the C_BCBDC page on erpprep.com checked on 13 October 2026.
Is the SAP BDC certification worth it in 2026?
It is worth it if you work, or want to work, on SAP data and analytics projects, because it is the entry credential for SAP's current data platform. It supports experience and does not replace it.
Three points help you decide honestly:
- Scope. SAP states that the certification shows foundational knowledge and the skills to contribute as part of a project team. It does not claim architect-level depth.
- Effort. About seven hours of listed course content plus speaking practice is a modest investment compared with most SAP certifications.
- Direction. SAP has committed to equipping 12 million people with AI-ready skills by 2030, according to the SAP News feature of 15 May 2026, and positions trusted data as the foundation for that work.
