Mountain gorillas are only found in 3 countries in the whole world, the countries where you can find mountain gorillas are; Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda has half of the total gorilla population in the world which are distributed in Bwindi and Mgahinga national park. Gorilla trekking experience in Uganda is one of the most done activities and it creates a lifetime memory where you have to come closer to nature and engage in gorilla trekking experience. Uganda has over 26 habituated gorilla families which are ready for tracking, 25 gorilla families found in Bwindi which is divided into 4 gorilla sectors and these gorilla sectors in Bwindi are Buhoma gorilla sector, Nkuringo gorilla sector, Ruhija gorilla sector and Rushaga gorilla sector. The best gorilla sector for tracking gorillas in Bwindi is Rushaga and this is where you can also engage in gorilla habituation in case you want to spend the whole day in Uganda. The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda is $800 and for the gorilla enthusiasts who want to do gorilla habituation the cost is $1500 and the best time for tracking gorillas is in December to February and June to September, this is when the tracks are dry and passable.

Chimpanzee trekking Uganda

Uganda is the best place under the sun to see chimpanzees and you cannot enjoy a primate safari in Uganda without chimpanzee trekking being mentioned on the safari itinerary. Uganda has the largest number of chimpanzee population and they are distributed in Kibale national park this is also known as Primate capital with an estimated number of chimpanzees to be 7,000 individuals, other places in Uganda where you can track chimpanzees; Budongo forest which lies on the foothills of Murchison falls national park, Kaniyo-Pabidi forest in Murchison falls national park, Kyambura gorge in Queen Elizabeth national park, Ngamba Island which is another chimpanzee sanctuary. Chimpanzees share 99% DNA with human and this makes it the closest relative to a human being, a chimpanzee trekking permit is $250 for foreign non-residents, $200 for the foreign residents. Kibale is also a home to 13 primates which are not common in other destinations.

Birding safaris in Uganda

Uganda is Africa’s top birdwatching destination which boasts to have 51% of all bird species in Africa and these birds in Uganda are distributed in different habitats for example in the tropical rainforests, montane forests, savanna, marshland and river water birds and these total to about 1,070 bird species in Uganda. Uganda is known for 1 endemic bird species which is known as Fox’s Weaver and other species are endemic to some habitats for example Albertine rift endemics, these are areas which are near lakes, mountains and forests.
