Written by James richard  ยป  Updated on: July 12th, 2024

One of the most essential parts of QuickBooks is the company file, which might cause problems for your organization. An error message that reads, 'Cannot open company file in QuickBooks,' may appear to users, preventing them from using the program and accessing crucial data.

This issue can be annoying and reduce output. It frequently occurs due to things like incorrect file location or file corruption. This post offers comprehensive strategies to eliminate such company file issues.

Reasons Why You Are Unable to Start Company File in QuickBooks

If you cannot start the company file in QuickBooks, the following factors could be the reason.

  1. If the company file is in a troublesome directory or location, QuickBooks may also be unable to open it. Conflicts like QuickBooks Error 6177 0 may result from this, particularly if the file is shared via a network. Move the company file to a new location, such as your desktop, and try to open it there to troubleshoot the issue.
  2. If Host Multi-User Access is enabled on more than just the server machine, QuickBooks may be unable to open the company file. This incorrect setup may result in conflicts and access problems, making it impossible for QuickBooks to open the company file properly.

Resolving the QuickBooks Unable to Open the Company File Issue

You can use either of the two solutions to resolve QuickBooks' inability to open the company file issue:

Option 1: Turn Off Hosting on Your PCs

You should turn off Host Multi-User Access on your workstations if your company file is hosted on a network. The file should only be hosted by the server machine. To turn off hosting on your computers:

  1. Launch QuickBooks on a desktop computer.
  2. Avoid opening the company file.
  3. Select Utilities from File.
  4. If you see 'Host Multi-User Access,' proceed to the next workstation without selecting it.
  5. The problem is not with this workstation.
  6. Choose the 'Stop Hosting Multi-User Access' option, if it appears.
  7. Carry out the same actions on every workstation.

Proceed to your server computer (the one that often houses your firm files) after inspecting each workstation:

  1. Start your server computer's QuickBooks program.
  2. Select Utilities under File.
  3. If you see the 'Host Multi-User Access' option, select it.

Turn on and off the multi-user setting:

  1. Navigate to File > Utilities, then choose 'Stop Hosting Multi-User Access.'
  2. Click File > Utilities, then choose 'Host Multi-User Access.'
  3. Try launching your company file once more.

Option 2: Move Your Company File

The problem may stem from where your company file is located. To open the file, try transferring it to your desktop. If your company file is shared over a network, make sure that everyone has signed out before continuing.

  1. Navigate to Start, then use the search box to type 'File Explorer' to launch File Explorer.
  2. Find the folder in your QuickBooks folder that has your company file.
  3. The file format will be [Your firm name].QBW.
  4. Choose Copy by right-clicking on the company file and then Paste it.
  5. Navigate to File > Open or Restore Company after starting QuickBooks.
  6. Click Open after selecting the company file that you copied to your desktop.

If you cannot open company file in QuickBooks, this guide can help. To avoid data loss, always remember to periodically back up your company file. Also, ensure the file is not hosted elsewhere, verify your QuickBooks version, and utilize QuickBooks File Doctor to diagnose and resolve these common problems efficiently.
