Overview

Gorilla trekking is a wildlife adventure that allows you to encounter and observe gorillas in their natural habitat. It is primarily available in East and Central Africa, with the main destinations being Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Gorilla trekking offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature and witness one of the most iconic and endangered species on the planet. The three countries combined have both Eastern and Western mountain gorillas offering options depending on what tourists desire or want. Gorilla trekking takes anywhere between 30 minutes to 6hours depending on the location of the gorilla families.

Much as the gorillas are in particular spots in Africa, one has options as to where and depending on the kind of gorilla desire to be seen.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda

Uganda is home to more than half of the world's population of mountain gorillas, with the majority situated in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a smaller portion in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offering the opportunity to spot the gentle giants in their natural habitat. Bwindi is the most popular destination for gorilla trekking, with several sectors including Ruhija, Buhoma, Rushaga, and Nkuringo; and 20 habituated families. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the southwestern corner of Uganda, is another option for gorilla trekking offering a scenic trekking experience for both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys; and adventure sought out as you trek deep within both forests having a treat of a lifetime and not forgetting the scenic views of the countryside.

The cost of gorilla trekking permits in Uganda is 800$ for foreign nonresidents, 700$ for foreign residents, 350,000shs for East Africans, and 500$ for the rest of Africa. However please note that these prices are subject to change, so it's essential to check with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or authorized tour operators for the most up-to-date permit fees. Gorilla trekking permits contribute to Uganda’s conservation efforts, helping to protect the gorillas and their habitat from threats such as poaching, habitat loss, and disease. Groups are limited to a certain number of people per day to minimize disturbance to the gorillas and their habitat and it's recommended to book permits well in advance for proper planning, especially during peak seasons.

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is also a world-class experience encouraging visitors from around the globe to enjoy the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat and breathtaking landscapes. Volcanoes National Park is the only park where gorilla trekking is done in Rwanda with 12 habituated gorilla families available. The park is known for its lush bamboo forests, Diana Fossey tomb, and volcanic scenery and is part of the Virunga Mountains. The park is also home to golden monkeys, birds, reptiles, and many other species.

Gorilla trekking permits cost 1,500$ for foreign nonresidents, 500$ for foreign residents and Africans, 200$ for Rwandans and East Africans. These prices can change depending on the season, however, to be on the safe side it is always better to book in advance to avoid any inconveniences, especially during peak seasons through the Rwanda Development Board or a trusted operator. Like Uganda, Rwanda uses a portion of the permit fee to support gorilla conservation, anti-poaching, community development, and habitat restoration and preservation.

Gorilla trekking in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Gorilla trekking in the DRC is adventurous as the country offers the opportunity to see both mountain gorillas and eastern lowland gorillas making it a top destination for gorilla trekking. Trekking in Congo is less commercialized compared to Uganda and Rwanda making it a unique and intimate experience. Virunga National Park, and Kahuzi-Biega National Park are the spots where the gorillas can be spotted with both being UNESCO World Heritage sites for their breathtaking landscapes like Nyirangongo volcano, stunning montane, and lowland forests. This form of tourism supports the conservation of critically endangered gorillas, community projects, and anti-poaching patrols to protect the wildlife with the gorillas.

In Congo a trekking permit costs 400$ per person, and 200$ during the low seasons at Virunga National Park, and 400$ for non-residents foreigners, 200$ for East Africans, and 20$ for nationals at Kahuzi-Biega National Park

Gorilla trekking is strictly regulated to ensure the safety of both visitors and gorillas. Visitors are accompanied by trained guides and park rangers who provide information about the gorillas and ensure that trekking guidelines are followed. It's important to listen to their instructions and maintain a respectful distance from the gorillas to minimize stress and disturbance. Hiring a local guide and porter is highly recommended, as they can provide valuable assistance during the trek and help support the local communities.

The best time for trekking in either of the three countries is during the dry seasons of June-September and December-February as these months have better trekking conditions with less rain or muddy trails. A tourist should be in good shape to enjoy the trek as some trails can be strenuous depending on the gorilla family’s location, and be healthy as gorillas can also easily get sick as humans and they must be protected from any kind of ailments caused by humans.
