The Kuari Pass Trek: Lord Curzon's Trail

Kuari Pass Trek – Walking in the Footsteps of Legends

The Kuari Pass Trek, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, is a scenic journey through forests, alpine meadows, and panoramic mountain vistas. Once explored by Lord Curzon, the trail is often referred to as the Curzon Trail and has become a favorite for trekkers seeking Himalayan charm without extreme difficulty.

Ideal for both beginners and seasoned hikers, Kuari Pass offers not only majestic views but also a window into the peaceful mountain life of Uttarakhand.

Through Forests and Meadows

Your trek begins from Tapovan or Dhak Village, both reachable from Joshimath, which is connected by road from Rishikesh or Haridwar. From the trailhead, the path winds through charming villages like Tugasi and Guling, surrounded by oak, rhododendron, and pine forests. These early stretches blend nature with glimpses of snow-clad Himalayan peaks.

As you climb higher, dense woods give way to expansive alpine meadows or bugyals. Campsites such as Khullara offer wide-open landscapes framed by towering peaks like Dronagiri, Hathi-Ghoda, Nanda Devi, and Kamet—a visual feast for any mountain lover.

The Kuari Pass Summit

The highlight of the trek is reaching Kuari Pass, perched at around 3,650 meters. While the climb is moderate, altitude and weather can present challenges, especially in snow. On clear days, the pass unveils a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Garhwal Himalayas.

It’s a photographer’s dream and a soul-stirring reward for the effort.

Seasons of Beauty

From December to March, the route may be snow-covered, turning the trail into a winter wonderland. In spring and post-monsoon months, wildflowers bloom and the forests come alive. Sunrise views from campsites like Tali and Khullara are magical—golden light illuminating distant peaks creates moments of pure serenity.
