IBM made the first dot matrix printer in 1957. However, the first dot matrix impact printer was introduced in 1970 by Centronics. It prints letters as a combination of dots. Dot matrix printers are the most popular among serial printers. These consist of a matrix of pins on the print head of the printer that form the character.
The computer memory sends one character at a time to be printed by the printer. There is a carbon between the pin and the paper. When the pin hits the carbon, the words are printed on the paper.
