Raster image or bitmap image is made up of many small squares or dots which we call pixels.

If you zoom in on this image, you will be able to see these small pixels. Photos taken with your mobile phone's camera are also examples of raster images.

These types of images are pixel and resolution based. Their resolution is determined by DPI (Dots Per Inch) or PPI (Points Per Inch).

Due to being pixel based, when their size is increased, then after a limit they become blurred or pixelated and their quality becomes poor.

In raster image, you can easily make a smooth painting by mixing many different colors.

To create or edit raster image, you need software like Photoshop, GIMP.

Images saved in formats like JPEG, PNG, GIF are raster images only.
