What is a meta description?

The meta description is the short paragraph of text placed in the HTML of a webpage that describes its content. The meta description will then appear under your page’s URL in the search results. This is also known as a snippet.

The meta description will also often appear when people share your articles across other websites and social channels.

Meta Description is a code snippet, which is written on Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML). When a user does a keyword search on search engines like Google, Bing etc., the search engine shows the best ranked post or page related to that keyword on the result page.

Just below the title tag of the web page shown, a content summary of one or two sentences is also shown. This summary is called Meta Description and where this summary is written, it is called Meta Tag. There is a limit to write up to 160 characters in the meta description, but it is considered good to write between 50 - 155 characters.

A meta description is an attribute within your meta tags that helps describe your page. This snippet of text may appear in the search engine results under your headline, though sometimes, search engines will pull a snippet of text from the main body copy of the page instead.

You can find the meta description on any web page by right-clicking on the page and selecting "view source" or "view page source"

This is an On-Page SEO. Look, let me explain this to you in simple words. Suppose you have opened a shop for your business. Now when you initially advertise your shop, you write about your shop, your address, as well as what is in it or what goods you can get. This is the meta description of that shop or your business.

Seeing the same advertisement or seeing the banner outside your shop, any new visitor understands what he will get in it. In the same way, there is a meta description for the blog too, which tells the visitor what is in your blog.
