An optical disc drive (ODD) is a device used to read and write data from an optical disc (CD/DVD). The optical disc is so named because its technology is based on light. As the disc spins, a laser beam follows a rising trail of pits and lands in the disc's plastic material. The pits reflect light differently than the lands, which store the data on the optical disc as a series of digital codes 0's and 1's.
