A joystick is an input device that moves in all directions and controls a machine or symbol in a computer program. It's pretty much like a mouse, except that if you stop to move the mouse, the cursor will also stop. But with joystick, the pointer does not stop and continues to move in the direction indicated by the joystick. You must return the joystick to its upright position to stop the pointer.
Most joysticks have two buttons, known as a trigger. This type of mouse is mostly used for playing video games and graphic applications.
