LCOS stands for Liquid Crystal on Silicon which is a variation of LCD technology. Like LCD projectors, LCOS projectors split the light into red, green, and blue components and direct them to three separate LCD-based imagers. However, the light first reflects off a shiny surface on the back of the cell array rather than passing only through the LCD cells.

In LCOS projectors white lamp is used as the light source. Some LCOS projectors use a blue laser and a yellow phosphor for the light source.

LCOS projectors use three LCOS chips to organize the light into red, green and blue color channels. However, unlike DLP projectors, it does not have a color wheel. LCOS technology is generally higher in resolution and also higher in price.
